Detailed Information

Zinc is an essential trace element and a cofactor for over 70 enzymes, including alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, and RNA and DNA polymerases. Zinc facilitates wound healing and helps maintain normal growth, skin integrity, and the senses of taste and smell. Severe zinc deficiency may result in skin lesions, alopecia, diarrhea, increased susceptibility to infections, and failure to thrive in children. Zinc is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and distributed throughout the body. The highest concentrations are found in hair, eyes, male reproductive organs, and bone, while lower levels occur in the liver, kidneys, and muscles. Approximately 80% of circulating zinc is present in erythrocytes.
