Ambroxol Hydrochloride
Bilco contains Ambroxol Hydrochloride 15 mg/5 ml, a mucolytic/secretolytic expectorant (the active metabolite of bromhexine) that helps thin and mobilize bronchial secretions to improve mucociliary clearance and ease expectoration in productive cough. Ambroxol has also been associated with stimulation of pulmonary surfactant synthesis/secretion in respiratory epithelium, which may further support mucus transport.

Detailed Information
Ambroxol is a metabolite of bromhexine. It possesses mucokinetic (improves mucus transport) and secretolytic (liquefies secretions) properties. Ambroxol stimulates the serous cells of the glands in the bronchial mucosa, increasing mucus secretion. Its mucolytic effect is associated with depolymerization and splitting of mucoproteins and mucopolysaccharide fibers, reducing mucus viscosity. This facilitates expectoration and eases breathing. Ambroxol also stimulates the production of pulmonary surfactant phospholipids by alveolar cells and exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In patients with COPD, it improves airway patency. Long-term use is possible due to its good tolerability.
