Metformin Hydrochloride

METFEN is used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, its main activities are to control the glucose level of the blood by increasing its peripheral utilisation and to inhibit glycogenosis in the diabetic patients. Unlike insulin, it does not encourage lipogenesis.It reduces the blood glucose level in diabetes and in cortisone induced hyperglycaemia in pre-diabetes, but it has no effects on the blood sugar level of normal persons except in the fasting state. It reduces the blood cholesterol in maturity onset diabetes. It also reduces the insulin requirements of young diabetes. It may be used alone or in conjunction with another oral hypoglycaemic agent such as a sulphonylurea or with insulin.
